Trails of
Refugio Los Volcanes
Discover the most magical routes of Amboró National Park. Guided walks that take you to the heart of Bolivia’s biodiversity.
Hiking Trails
Refugio Los Volcanes is located at the edge of Amboró National Park. While wildlife does inhabit the area, we cannot guarantee sightings, as animals are shy and rarely seen.
Night and early morning hikes are only allowed if weather conditions are favorable and do not pose a risk to hikers.
Local guides at Refugio Los Volcanes are not exclusive to a single reservation. The presence of a guide is mandatory for safety reasons.
Hikes are arranged upon arrival, in coordination with the hotel management. They cannot be scheduled in advance, as they depend on various factors such as weather and guests’ physical conditions. Groups are formed on-site based on these conditions to ensure a balanced experience.

VERY EASY (0.5 – 1 HOUR)
Orquídeas Trail
This short loop begins near the restaurant. The path crosses the Elvira River twice and is very low impact, with only a gentle incline.
You’ll see butterflies, orchids, bromeliads, medicinal plants like sour cane (Costus sp.), and ornamental plants like the split-leaf philodendron (Monstera deliciosa) and the crown-of-thorns vine. From May to July, various types of mushrooms also appear.

EASY (45 MINUTES)
Bibosi Walk
This short walk is a great alternative when the river is high, as it doesn’t require crossing. The path takes you among majestic fig trees — some centuries old — ending at the largest one on the property, whose shape resembles the sacred tree from
the movie Avatar.
From here, you can connect with the Orchids, Amboró Viewpoint, or Condor trails, expanding your experience depending on your available time and energy.

easy | 0.5 - 1 Hour
Tres Cascadas Trail
The Elvira River runs alongside the restaurant before splitting into three beautiful waterfalls. It’s a varied sequence of scenic spots, with natural pools and small sandy beaches. Along the way, you might spot the Queen’s slipper orchid and the crested oropendola
(Psarocolius decumanus).

medium | 1.5 - 2 Hour
Mirador Amboró Trail
This trail can easily be combined with the Condor Trail or Bibosi Walk, as it begins at the impressive “Grand Bibosi,” located at the edge of Amboró National Park. The circuit crosses the river a couple of times before ascending a gentle slope that
leads to the viewpoint.
From above, the park's depth draws your gaze, with its vast green sea contrasted by sandstone cliffs emerging from the forest.
On the way back, the trail winds through a charming fig tree forest — a perfect visual finale to the experience.

Moderate | 2 - 3 Hour
Cóndor Trail
This trail passes through an ancient forest of giant fig trees (bibosis) before ascending to the trail's viewpoint. It's a great way to discover the region’s lush cloud forest and encounter the forest’s guardians: the fig trees (Ficus species).
The hike rewards visitors with a panoramic view of the forest and Refugio Los Volcanes. Along the way, you may spot mushrooms,
ferns, the “yesquero” and “garlic” trees — and with some luck, monkeys in the treetops.

moderate | 3 Hour
Sararí Trail
This undulating trail crosses the river and small streams several times, with a gentle slope that makes it both accessible and enjoyable. Its moist, low-light environment creates the perfect habitat for lichens, mushrooms, and butterflies.
Among the giant fig trees, you’ll find various species of amaranth. A picturesque waterfall marks the end of the path — a perfect
place to rest before returning.

moderate | 2 - 3 Hour
Don Albert Trail
Heading toward the third waterfall, this trail is named in honor of the founder of Refugio Los Volcanes. The path takes you through an enchanting forest, where capuchin monkeys (Cebus nigritus) and tayras (Eira barbara) may silently and curiously join the journey.
At the end awaits a spectacular view from Don Albert Viewpoint — the second highest in Refugio Los Volcanes. With a bit of luck, you might witness the flight of the condor or catch sight of the majestic black-chested buzzard-eagle.

moderate | 3 Hour
Loro Trail
This is one of the most iconic and well-known trails at Refugio Los Volcanes, highly recommended for birdwatching. Along the main ascent, you'll see endemic flora such as Tillandsia samaipatensis. From the two viewpoints, visitors are captivated by the movement and sounds of parrots, including the military macaw (best time: June to November).
The panoramic route traverses the terrain in a way that allows bird observation from all angles — both above and below. Colorful lizards can also be seen along the rocky walls, as well as
plant species such as bamboo, mini bamboo, and the popular
“old man’s beard” moss.

Difficult | 4 - 5 Hour
Park Amboró Trail
This route plunges deep into the heart of Amboró National Park, crossing the river countless times. You'll hop between rocks, balance on fallen logs, or simply get your feet wet — each
step part of the adventure.
The effort is rewarded with a beautiful waterfall and a natural pool perfect for a refreshing dip. Since the trail takes 4 to 5 hours, it’s ideal to bring a picnic-style lunch box to enjoy by the water.
For the more adventurous, the trail continues with a steep climb to a second, even more secluded and spectacular waterfall.

very difficult | 4 - 5 Hour
La Mochila Trail
An alternative to the Parque Amboró trail, this route offers a true jungle exploration. It lasts at least 4 hours, crossing the river multiple times before reaching a fork — the starting point of the real adventure. The first stop is a small waterfall with reddish yellowish waters, striking in its beauty.
From there, a challenging climb leads to a grand waterfall with a wide, crystal-clear pool — perfect for a swim and a moment of awe in the vast forest. On the way back, with some luck, you might spot animal tracks in the sand — silent reminders of the wildlife that calls Amboró home.

DIFFICULT TO VERY DIFFICULT | 3 - 4 Hour
Cumbre Trail
The summit ascent starts moderately and becomes increasingly steep as it climbs to the highest viewpoint of Refugio Los Volcanes. The effort is rewarded with a stunning 360° view — Amboró National Park stretches beneath your feet, surrounded by the "guardian" mountains of the Refugio.
This unforgettable experience may be crowned by the flight of the Andean condor — the king of the mountains. This trail is recommended only when the terrain is dry, and it's worth doing at different times of day:
sunrise, midday, or sunset. It's also home to giant ferns and the orange blossom tree.
